Your guide to half term in Wirral

With half term fast approaching, you might be wondering how to keep your little ones entertained whilst they are off school without breaking the bank.

Well look no further - we have pulled together a round-up of some of the best child-friendly activities in the area, including free and indoor attractions to accommodate the ever-changing British weather.

Don’t let the rain stop you, though – we have also included some fun outdoors ideas, so dig out your wellies if you are feeling adventurous!

Take a trip to the seaside

There’s plenty to do in New Brighton, whatever the weather! Start off with a walk around Vale Park and explore the mini fairy village. Walk along the coastline towards Marine Point to grab an award-winning ice cream from Caffe Cream, or a spot of lunch from one of the several restaurants and cafes along the waterfront. If the weather allows, why not take your own picnic onto the beach and enjoy the views?

Older kids will be impressed by the murals in New Brighton’s Victoria Quarter, which showcase the amazing work of both local and international artists. See how many you can spot and take some time to soak up the atmosphere of this up-and-coming part of the town. Whilst you’re there, don’t forget to look out for the five identical mermaids on the New Brighton Mermaid Trail

For those wetter days, New Brighton offers plenty of indoor fun; from bowling and arcade entertainment, through to family-friendly screenings at the Light Cinema. On Saturday 22 February, settle down for one of two matinee performances of the Mr Men and Little Miss Stage Show at the Floral Pavilion, with tickets starting from £12.50.

Let off some steam

Inflation! at St Mary’s College in Wallasey is open from 9am to 6pm during the half-term holiday with an area of interlinked inflatables where your whole family will have fun running, jumping, climbing and sliding around for up to three hours. On the other side of the borough, Jumpin’ Josephs in Bromborough provides an indoor trampolining experience with no age limits.

If the sun is shining, check out our guide to some of the best local walks to make the most of the great outdoors on your doorstep.

See the sights

Hopping on board one of the River Explorer Cruises is a great way to soak up the views on both sides of the Mersey. You can break your journey up by hopping off at any of the ferry terminals, including Seacombe and Woodside. The U-boat Story (a museum where you can see a real-life german U-boat at Woodside terminal) is included in the cost, making this great value for money.

Don’t forget to stop for a bite at Woodside Ferry Village, with plenty of food to choose from for even the fussiest of eaters! If you're joining or disembarking from Seacombe, the Ferry Terminal boasts a soft play centre and a café, making this another great option to spend a couple of hours. Why not make a day of it and spend some time at both?

Get creative

For young budding artists, Lady Lever Art Gallery is running a free interactive session for children to make their own cut-out hanging mobile from 1-4pm on Thursday 20 February, taking inspiring from their Matisse exhibition. Check out our guide to Port Sunlight for other activities whilst you are in the area!

Another couple of great venues are The Potting Shed in Hoylake and Claremont Farm, which both offer activities at a cost.

Learn something new together

Enjoy the sights and sounds of yesteryear at Wirral Transport Museum, where the volunteers restore and preserve transport of the past for the delight and benefit of the present and the future. Make sure to check their opening times before you go to avoid disappointment.

Our libraries are for much more than just reading! From shared storytelling through to code club, have at look at the libraries calendar online for the most up-to-date events near you over February half-term.
