The architect, tv presenter and writer George Clarke, has chosen ten places (from a long list of public nominations) to tell the story of England's homes and gardens as part of an Historic England campaign.

Port Sunlight

The Dell, Port Sunlight

Two places in Wirral feature in the top 10 list and these are:

  • Birkenhead Park, created in 1847, this is thought to be the first publicly funded civic park in the world and the inspiration for New York's Central Park
  • Port Sunlight, a village created in 1888 by Lord Leverhulme for his soap factory workers
