The region's last surviving Baby Grand Tram has been named Tram of the Year in a national competition.

Tramcar 245 , a 70-seater streamliner, won the accolade months after it returned to service on Wirral’s heritage tramway between Woodside Ferry and the Transport Museum at Taylor Street, Birkenhead .

It followed a six-year restoration project by volunteers from Merseyside Tramway Preservation Society.

The award – Tramcar (Traditional) of the Year – was decided by readers of British Trams Online and the tram won 41% of the votes.

A Wirral Transport Museum & Heritage Tramway spokesman said in a statement on Facebook: “After six years of restoration this award means a lot to our members and volunteers - just to have this tram at the Wirral Transport Museum & Heritage Tramway is very special as it is the last surviving tram of its type in the U.K.”

“Thank you to everyone who voted and to all of our fans and supporters. This year is going to be a big year for our little museum.”

In September Tramcar 245 carried fare-paying passengers on Merseyside for the first time in 58 years.

It was built at Edge Lane Works and entered service on July 3, 1938.

The iconic vehicle ran until September 14, 1957 when it took part in the parade to mark the end of Liverpool’s tramway operations.

The project was funded by a £50,000 Heritage Lottery Fund grant and National Museums Liverpool, with support from Wirral Council.

Other finalists in the same category at the Tram of the Year awards were Blackpool Balloon 715 tram, Hull 96, Blackpool Railcoach 680, Burton & Ashby 14 and London County Council 106.
