Restored historic Green Goddess tramcar is ready to ride

8th September 2015

Categories: News

On Saturday 12 September, Tramcar 245 – the last surviving Liverpool Baby Grand - will carry fare-paying passengers on Merseyside for the first time in 58 years.

The four wheeled 70-seater Baby Grand streamliner, is ready after a six year restoration by volunteers from the Merseyside Tramway Preservation Society. Operating within sight of the Liver Birds - albeit on the Wirral side of the river - it will run as part of the historic tram fleet that runs on Wirral's Heritage tramway between Woodside Ferry and the Transport Museum at Taylor Street, Birkenhead.

You are invited to send a reporter, photographer or camera crew to see Tramcar 245 at Wirral Transport Museum, 1 Taylor Street, Birkenhead, CH41 1BG on Wednesday 9 September at 10:30am. Sharon Brown, Curator of Land Transport & Industry at the Museum of Liverpool, as well as Terry Martin, Chairman of the Merseyside Tramway Preservation Society, will be available for photographs and interviews.

Tramcar 245 has an historic place in Liverpool’s transport story, as the last surviving Liverpool Baby Grand in preservation. Built at Edge Lane Works, it entered service on 3 July 1938, until 14 September 1957 when it took part in the parade to mark the end of Liverpool’s tramway operations. Since then the iconic vehicle, which is owned by National Museums Liverpool, has been in storage.

Tramcar 245 launches its public service on Saturday 12 September with a special commemoration ride that includes a Liverpool Last Tram Souvenir Ticket. Tickets cost £5 for Adults and £3 for concessions per return journey.

Janet Dugdale, Director of the Museum of Liverpool said: “We are delighted with the work completed on Tramcar 245 by the skilled volunteers from Merseyside Tramway Preservation Society. They have restored the tram so beautifully that it’s thrilling to see such an important object from the Museum’s collections back in operation.”

Terry Martin, chairman of the MTPS, who was the project leader for the restoration said: "Though the car was in a very poor state, we have conserved as many original features as we could and replaced any rotted timbers with new ash hardwood. The car has been completely rewired and has a new underframe. The finished product looks absolutely stunning and I am sure the public will love it."

The project was funded by a £50,000 Heritage Lottery Fund grant and National Museums Liverpool, with support from Wirral Borough Council.
