Simon and Garfunkel Story, Floral Pavilion, New Brighton

Following its West End success at London’s Leicester Square Theatre in February 2015, The Simon and Garfunkel Story is currently the No 1 touring theatre show celebrating the lives and career of this folk/rock duo sensation. Starring Dean Elliot (Paul Simon) and David Tudor (Art Garfunkel), and directed by David Beck, The Simon and Garfunkel Story comes to New Brighton’s Floral Pavilion Theatre on Thursday 3rd September 2015.

The Simon and Garfunkel Story tells the fascinating tale of how two young boys from Queens, New York went on to become the world’s most successful music duo of all time. Starting from their humble beginnings as 50’s Rock n Roll duo ‘Tom & Jerry’, the show takes you through all the songs and stories that shaped them, the dramatic split, their individual solo careers and ending with a stunning recreation of the legendary 1981 Central Park reunion concert.

LIPA trained actor and musician Dean Elliott rose to fame in the lead role as Buddy Holly in the West End, Olivier Award nominated musical Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story. In this role he had the honour of opening the 2008 West End Revival at the Duchess Theatre, London and in Buddy’s hometown of Lubbock, Texas before taking the role around Europe and Canada. Other notable theatre work includes Over The Rainbow – The Eva Cassidy Story (UK No1 Tour), Release The Beat (Arcola Theatre, London) and the multi award winning Ed – The Musical (Edinburgh Festival).

David Tudor (Art Garfunkel) trained as an actor at Drama Centre London. Notable work includes playing Adam Clayton, bassist for U2, in the feature film Killing Bono (Paramount pictures) and Peter in The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe (Haymarket theatre, Basingstoke). Other notable theatre work includes roles in Private Thoughts in Public Spaces and Adam Barnard’s Too Small To Be A Planet (Company of Angels). David spent 2013 to 2014 touring the UK with two one-man shows, Can I Do You Now, Sir and A Little Of What You Fancy? (Frantic Theatre), performing over three hundred and fifty shows in the year.

Director David Beck also graduated from LIPA. Having initially trained as an actor, he now works predominantly as a director and producer as well as teaching students at RADA and some of London’s other top drama schools. He has been involved in numerous award winning productions at the Edinburgh and Brighton Fringe festivals and works extensively with the Wireless Theatre Company directing live and studio recorded plays that can be downloaded from the internet.

This highly-authentic musical tribute also gives a context to the songs by linking their lives and artistic development to wider political events of the time. Using a mixture of narrative and photographs projected onto the back drop of the stage, the show then follows Simon and Garfunkel’s musical and personal progression through the Greenwich Village folk scene of the early 60s; Paul Simon’s solo voyage to Britain where he toured and penned classic numbers like Kathy’s Song and Homeward Bound; the upheaval and struggles of the American Civil Rights Movement; some experimental songs forged in the 1967 Summer of Love; and the recording of Mrs Robinson, – their well-known contribution to the film, The Graduate – which brought them worldwide fame.
