Wonders of Wirral campaign

Wirral’s attractions are being celebrated in a new campaign aimed at increasing the number of day visitors to the borough this spring and beyond.

The ‘Wonders of Wirral’ campaign was recently launched at Carr Farm Garden Centre in Meols with members of the Wirral Attractions Partnership joining tourism staff from Wirral Council in promoting what the borough has to offer for day trippers.

The attractions partnership consists of 22 members across five different themes – parks and gardens, culture and heritage, active leisure, family fun and shopping and entertainment – and together they already bring in more than six million day visitors to Wirral.

The campaign, which will involve promotion through specialist publications and websites as well as across the transport and tourism network, aims to build on those visitor numbers and encourage repeat visits through highlighting the diverse range of attractions within Wirral.

It is being underpinned by a fantastic competition offering a lucky winner an unbeatable overnight stay in Wirral, incorporating bed and breakfast at the 4-star Leverhulme Hotel in Port Sunlight, dinner and a show at the Floral Pavilion, afternoon tea at ‘Home’ at Woodside and a Mersey River Cruise amongst things in a package worth around £650.

Colin Simpson, Curator of the Williamson Art Gallery and Museum and Chair of the Wirral Attractions Partnership, said: "Wirral’s day visitor economy is currently worth over £220 million each year; it attracts over 6.3 million day visitors and creates more than 2,200 full-time equivalent jobs.

"The Wonders of Wirral themed marketing campaign builds on this success, by promoting our collective offer regionally and nationally for the first time, with a view to growing the local economy by attracting even more visitors to the borough.

"I am so pleased the Council’s tourism team have developed this campaign for the Wirral Attractions Partnership and indeed they have helped double the size of the partnership over the past year, which is a reflection of the increasing strength and quality of tourism offer in Wirral."

The campaign was launched at Carr Farm Garden Centre, which is a member of the attractions partnership and which is currently investing significantly to grow its business and increase the number of visitors they attract. This includes a £3 million redevelopment on-site which has allowed them to open the brand-new 300-seat Atrium Restaurant.

The restaurant is open now but is set to be officially launched when the farm celebrates its 75th birthday with a special weekend of events at the end of the month. There will be a barbecue at the Atrium street cafe and various activities over the course of the weekend as the farm aims to raise funds for both Alder Hey Children's Hospital and Clatterbridge Hospital with a grand raffle.

Ben Jones, Manager at Carr Farm Garden Centre, added: “The value of working together as a partnership to promote Wirral as an attractive place to visit is obvious and we are delighted to play a part.”

A further campaign – “Discover Wirral” marketing the borough as a destination for short break holidays – will follow in the summer.
