Visit Britain Tourism Specialists come to Wirral

Tourism specialists from around the world visited Wirral this week to further confirm the borough’s position as a leading UK destination.

15 tourism experts from Europe, Asia, the Middle East, North and South America visited Port Sunlight on Wednesday to learn more about the village’s history and heritage and what it has to offer international visitors.

The trip was part of a wider event organised by the country’s ‘tourist board’, VisitBritain, who brought their VIBE 2015 expo to Liverpool for the first time where the international specialists were helping local businesses promote their services, particularly in new markets.

Leader of Wirral Council, Cllr Phil Davies, says: “Driving Wirral’s tourism economy is one of the key pledges within the new Wirral Plan. We are on track to achieve our visitor economy goal of £450 million by 2020. We are proud that Wirral is already the fastest growing visitor economy in the city region, however more can still be done and it will only be achieved through partnership.”

Wirral’s tourism economy is currently worth over £355 million, employs 4,800 full time equivalent jobs and attracts over 7.5 million visitors. The industry has grown by more than 40% in Wirral since 2009.

The experts who visited this week were welcomed by Kath Lynch, Heritage Manager at Port Sunlight Museum and Garden Village, and Deputy Chair of the Wirral Tourism Business Network.

Kath said: “We were so pleased to welcome this special delegation to Port Sunlight and be given the opportunity to highlight the village’s award winning quality. Port Sunlight was originally built by William Hesketh Lever in 1888 as a home for his workers at the nearby factory, which still has its international headquarters here, now known of course as Unilever.

“The model village is the work of more than 30 architects and the variety of the architecture and the outstanding beauty of more than 900 listed buildings is unique in the north west of England. The visit comes on top of some recent achievements for the village, which include winning both Wirral’s attraction and Liverpool City Region’s small attraction of the year in 2015.”

This latest visit to Wirral’s visitor attractions follows on from two others recently co-ordinated by Wirral Council’s tourism team. One of these was a delegation of tourism businesses from North Wales who are looking to replicate the success of the Wirral Tourism Business Network (WTBN).

WTBN now has more than 100 members forming a partnership across the range of tourism sectors - accommodation, attractions, coast, food and drink, golf and history and heritage – with the aim of increasing the number of visitors spending time and money in Wirral.

In addition last month more than 40 Blue Badge Guides from throughout the north west of England were given a bespoke tour of Wirral’s attractions. This visit was developed to help share and then disseminate the benefits of visiting Wirral as a short break or day visit destination.
