The Floral Pavilion Theatre continues to bring the best UK touring shows to the region whilst keeping great local talent centre stage.

Following a year which saw over 200,000 people go through the doors of the Floral Pavilion, the Wirral venue can boast that someone from every street in New Brighton came to see panto Jack and the Beanstalk. Last September, so inundated were they with people wanting to join the new volunteer Ambassadors Scheme, applications had to be closed early and are not reopening until later this summer.  Then, just this month, the Floral became the first theatre in Liverpool City Region to host an ice show with Russian Ice Stars’ Peter Pan On Ice, and are the region’s venue of choice not only for the award-winning Horrible Histories Live tours, but also Bill Kenwright’s Agatha Christie Theatre Company.

The thriving New Brighton venue now launches another ambitious new season which includes: the first tour by the revered Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company; a new stage adaptation of classic tv comedy Rising Damp; New Zealand comedy superstar Rhys Darby; a fascinating slice of George Formby’s life in Formby; the concert tour of West End hit musical Carnaby Street; and emerging local comic and BGT semi-finalist Callum Oakley’s debut solo tour.

David MacKenzie, Theatre Manager said: “Five years ago we were given an amazing new building, a 21st century resource with lots of possibilities, and it became the driving force behind the regeneration of this area. New Brighton has grown exponentially since then, as has our programme, and now we, working with our partners at Marine Point and Visit Wirral, enter the next five years stronger, bolder, and more ambitious, with the most devoted local support.”

The Floral Conference Centre and Blue Lounge is proving a successful and multifaceted partner to the theatre programme. Weddings for 2014 have doubled on the previous year with many bookings already taken for 2015.  The space this season alone will be used as a wedding venue, a jobs fair, a wedding fair, team building days, first aid training for Wirral volunteers, local school performance & prize-givings, part of the International Festival of Business, concerts from the Liverpool Mozart Orchestra and Wirral Schools’ Big Band, the Wirral Tourism Awards, gigs, studio plays and the ever popular Antiques and Collectors Fair.

When Wirral once again becomes World Host to The Open Championship in July, the theatre has programmed a week of shows with something for everyone: from Comedy Theatre Company’s fantastic new stage production of Rising Damp to Wirral Symphony Orchestra’s Last Night of the Proms; then comedy from How I met your Mother and David Letterman regular Rhys Darby, to family fun with the return of Peppa Pig Live with Peppa Pig’s Big Splash!, culminating in the Astral Coast music festival.

Shows for children and families have always been the cornerstone of the programme at the Floral. At the end of April CBeebies’ Sid Sloane presents an interactive show with games, songs, poems and magic, Sooty is joined by Soo and Sweep for more “izzy wizzy let’s get busy” in June, then in August Angelina Ballerina The Mousical compliments perfectly a summer of Monday afternoons with Miss Giggles.

Music for all tastes comes in the form of an acoustic set from Barbara Dickson and Rab Noakes, the wonderful mix of soul world funk and jazz with the Snake Davis Band, and a rare chance to see Kieran Goss’s legendary live solo show.

‘Homegrown’ continues to put great local talent centre stage and keep the Floral at the heart of its community, with visits this season from BOST with Broadway classic Guys and Dolls, St Paul’s Operatic Society with 21st century West End musical The Witches of Eastwick, Hoylake School of Dance, Liverpool Theatre School and Merseyside Dance & Drama Centre to name but a few.

Regular lunchtime events include the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, while Music on the Plaza gives emerging local talent the opportunity to perform in a relaxed friendly environment. The weekly Choral Pavilion choir is open to all and now has a membership of just over 80 and the monthly Floral Tea Dance puts ‘Strictly’ through its paces.

Still to come this season: a week-long visit from West End sell-out sensation, Dreamboats and Petticoats; Russian State Ballet & Opera House present Carmen with a large live orchestra; last year’s musical hit at Liverpool’s Epstein Theatre, Heart & Soul, comes to New Brighton; it’s educational but not as you know it with Horrible Histories’ Barmy Britain; and Lynne Fitzgerald and Louis Emerick use the intimate studio space of the Blue Lounge to full affect with Jim Cartwright’s Two.

When the new season starts in May, the Floral will be introducing its ‘Keeping It Local’ initiative of a £1 per ticket fee (on up to 8 tickets). This now industry-wide move is to ensure the theatre continues to offer its own Box Office service and keep the use of ticket agents to a minimum, avoiding higher fees and loss of personal local service and knowledge. Friends of the Floral Members are exempt from this fee.
