Shore Cottage in Wirral wins North West Coastal Award

Shore Cottage Studio Ltd, the innovative beach front studio at Shore Cottage, Thurstaston, has won the Coastal Best Practice: Coastal Leisure & Tourism Category of the North West Awards for Coastal Excellence.
The award scheme is run every 2 years by the North West Coastal Forum and is designed to showcase and celebrate good practice and inspiring projects, community groups and individuals who make a contribution to good long-term management of our coastline.
Laura and Kris Heath from Shore Cottage Studio received their award from Peter Hampson, Chief Executive of British Destinations at the Forum’s Destination Coast! conference at Grange-over-Sands last week.
As well as the careful environmental design of the studio the judges were particularly impressed with the way this small business is putting Wirral’s coast on the map by raising awareness of Wirral’s coastal offer to national and international markets whilst at the same time supporting other local businesses such as accommodation and food providers. Their work with other organisations and the community, for example hosting  beach litter picks for the local Soroptomists group and getting involved with the Big Dee Day (Environment Agency, Wirral Council, Cheshire West and Chester Council) and the Living Seas Event (Cheshire Wildlife Trust, Chester Zoo, Wirral Country Park Rangers), at which over 70 families and individuals created flotsam weavings with beach combed litter and natural dyed recycled textiles in the studio all helps to raise awareness of key issues and fosters  appreciation and better stewardship of the coast.
Caroline Salthouse, North West Coastal Forum, said:
‘I’m delighted Shore Cottage Studio has won this award. It shows not only that small is beautiful but that size is not important in making a real difference to people’s understanding of the coast by helping them to see & explore it in different ways. It’s an inspiring and exciting business demonstrating sound environmental values and I wish them every success.’

Other 2014 NW ACE winners included Coastal Best Practice: Adaptation to Climate Change – the Environment Agency, RSPB and Natural England for Hesketh Out Marsh East managed realignment; Coastal Community Action: Rossall Beach Residents and Community Group; Coastal Champion: 3 joint winners – Jayne Foat, Sefton Council; Annie Heslop, Keep Britain Tidy and Emma McColm, Morecambe Bay Partnership. The 3 winners all work with the public on the LOVEmyBEACH campaign.
