Merseyside-filmed psychological thriller Blood screened in Wirral cinema ahead of official release

A Merseyside cinema hosted one of the first screenings of a new British thriller shot in Wirral and Liverpool.

The Light Cinema in New Brighton was given permission for a special showing of Blood before its official release date on Friday 31st May.

The drama focuses on two detective brothers, Joe (Paul Bettany) and Chrissie (Liverpool actor Stephen Graham), who have always lived in the shadow of their ex-policeman dad Lenny (Brian Cox).

With Lenny showing signs of dementia, the brothers take it upon themselves to find the killer when a local girl is murdered.

They soon have a prime suspect, but when the case against him falls apart their lives take a darker turn.

Fliming locations included Wallasey Town Hall, Birkenhead Town Hall, Leasowe lighthouse and The Vines pub in Liverpool.

Hilbre Island off the coast of West Kirby also plays a major role in the events of the film.

Residents who took part in the filming joined reviewers at the special Light screening yesterday – including Major Mace, whose home in New Brighton was used for part of the filming.

His house, Vale Park Lodge, doubled for the home of a possible witness (Adrian Edmondson) to a case being investigated.

Mr Mace, 65, said: “Nick Murphy the director just knocked on the door one day when he was in the area looking at locations.

“The crew were here for a couple of days and they stripped the kitchen and put all their own stuff in. Afterwards they let me keep a table and chairs they’d brought in.

“It was fantastic to see how they did it. We’ve been waiting for a year but it was amazing to see it on screen – I couldn’t be more pleased.”

Cllr Chris Meaden, Wirral Council cabinet member for culture, tourism and leisure, said: “We work closely with Liverpool Film Office to help fulfil filming requests and were pleased to support the production of Blood, which included filming at Hilbre, and both Wallasey and Birkenhead Town Halls.”

Phil Dove, general manager of the Light Cinema, said: “We love the way the filmmakers have made the most of what are really cinematic locations.

“Liverpool has always been a popular location for filming, and we hope this will be the beginning of producers looking across the water for future projects.”
