Over the past four years tireless, hard work by a small independent brewing business in Birkenhead has paid dividends.

This week Peerless, run by Steve and Rose Briscoe, added yet another award to a growing cabinet of successes which they have achieved for their original brews. Judges at the SIBA North West Region Beer Competition tasted more than 140 beers from Cumbria, Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Cheshire before naming their top tipples.

Peerless Brewing Peerless Pale was hailed the champion standard bitter for the region with a gold award at the Society of Independent Brewers' North West Region beer competition – a leading beer industry contest.

Peerless Brewing Company only started brewing its Peerless Pale cask ale this year – and it has now been named the region’s champion “standard bitter” by the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA).

The standard bitter category, which attracted over 40 entries, focused on beers with a strength of less than 4%.

Peerless Pale was launched earlier this year at the company’s brewery in Pool Street, and after its North West success, Peerless Pale will now be going on to be judged again at the SIBA National Beer Competition in Sheffield next March.

Managing Director, Steve Briscoe said: “This is yet more terrific recognition from our peers that we are brewing top class cask ale. It is the fourth consecutive year that we have won at the contest, so this is another very happy birthday for Peerless.

“We are especially delighted to win with a beer that is less than a year old. The standard bitters class is the most fiercely fought with beers from many top award winning brewers such as Cumbria’s own Coniston and Hawkshead.

Peerless’s Jinja Ninja beer – which is brewed with root ginger, chillies and lemons – also won a silver award in the Speciality Bottled Beers category. Mr Briscoe said: “Jinja Ninja already has a great track record of awards, but it is wonderful to win another. We have had an excellent fourth year and these awards will give a further boost to our plans for growth in our fifth year. We have had an excellent fourth year and these awards will give a further boost to our plans for growth in our fifth year.”

Peerless has recently become the latest company to become a member of the Wirral Business Partnership, and Chief Executive Paula Basnett, has praised the latest award for Peerless Brewing. “Both Steve, Rose and the Peerless team have quite rightly earned this new accolade, which is being added to many others which they have won previously. They have worked tirelessly in growing the business and the rewards of four years hard work, enthusiasm and commitment are now bringing the recognition quite rightly deserved.”
