Visitors to Port Sunlight’s Summer Festival will get a chance to twist and shout when it celebrates 50 years since the village hosted the Fab Four’s first official gig.

On August 18 1962, John, Paul, George and Ringo walked out onto the stage at Hulme Hall in the picturesque village and set off on their journey into music legend.

Organisers of the annual community festival, which takes place on Saturday August 25, have come together with International Beatle Week to celebrate the milestone anniversary.

During the day there will be performances from international Beatles’ tribute bands Les Sauterelles from Switzerland, Hocus Pocus from Brazil, The Tearaways from America’s West Coast and Beatlenuts from Thailand.

Lionel Bolland, chief executive of Port Sunlight Village Trust, said: “We’re thrilled to be adding a sixties twist to our annual Summer Festival.

“With the support of our sponsors and partnership organisations we will be bringing a completely new element to this home-grown event in the form of our International Beatle Week stage.

“Visitors can still expect all of their favourite stallholders, fun, games and fairground rides from previous years with the exciting addition of live Beatles tribute bands playing throughout the day”.

Dave Jones, director of International Beatle Week operator Cavern City Tours said: “We are excited to be working with Port Sunlight Village Trust to celebrate this landmark event in The Beatles history.

“Not only are we celebrating the 50th anniversary of Ringo’s first performance with the group but how this seemingly insignificant gig at the Port Sunlight Horticultural Society’s 17th Annual Show, with Ringo’s last-minute addition to the line-up, shaped the future of the most chronicled pop band in music history.

“Our outdoor stage at the Summer Festival will showcase the very best in The Beatles music throughout their long career and we look forward to welcoming the public to this free show”.

The village’s tree-lined boulevards will also play host to a parade of retro Vespa scooters à la Quadrophenia as well as a range of vintage cars and buses and our famous road train. It takes place from 11am-6pm and entry is free.
