Della Robbia Pottery returns home to Wirral after 100 years

27th June 2012

Categories: News

A dozen pieces of wonderful Della Robbia pottery returned this week to premises were they were created a 100 years ago. Historian Mr Peter Hyland brought samples of his prized collection of the Birkenhead made ceramics to the Rathbone Studio Gallery that stands on the site of the design workshop of the iconic pottery in Argyle Street, Birkenhead.

Janet Holmes who opened the new studio last month as part of the empty shops fund said “It was very emotional seeing the pots in the very spot they were created and a little eerie ... as they seemed very much at home like they had never been away”. Peter Hyland made the ‘pilgrimage’ to the new pottery as part of his research for a forthcoming book on the Della Robbia dynasty that was founded by the new galleries namesake Harold Rathbone in 1894.

Peter will be the special guest at an open day studio on Friday 13th July 3.00pm – 5.00pm, and will answer quires regarding any Della Robbia pieces that the Wirral public may own.

Pottery courses are available at the Rathbone Studio and Janet is on the lookout for the next generation of Della Robbia potters!!!
