Wirral hosts future stars tennis tournament

20th January 2012

From Wirral Globe

While the current best tennis players in the world battle it out in the Australian Open, some of the game's up and coming stars are heading for Wirral to take part in a prestigious tournament.

More than 100 players from around the world, including leading Britons Dan Evans and Josh Goodall, will be competing for the £15,000 purse and all are bidding to make the step up to join players on the ATP tour circuit.

Councillor Chris Meaden, Wirral council cabinet member for culture, tourism and leisure, said: "This is a real coup for the borough.

"Not only is it a massive endorsement of the quality of the facilities we offer at the tennis centre, but attracting such a big tournament to the area also provides a boost to local hotels, restaurants and shops."

Wirral Tennis and Leisure Centre in Bidston will host the event beginning this Sunday, January 22, to Saturday, January 28.

There is no charge for admission.
