Wirral leads the way with best North West beaches

Wirral boasts three out of the five ‘recommended’ North West beaches named in this year’s Good Beach Guide.

The annual guide published by the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) highlights Wirral’s three bathing beaches (Meols, Moreton and New Brighton) as ‘recommended’, the guide’s highest accolade. This recommendation is only given to beaches that have bathing water tested by the Environment Agency throughout the year and that meet the highest European standard for water quality.

Councillor David Elderton, Wirral Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Leisure said: “This endorsement from the MCS is fantastic news for Wirral and I am very proud that once again our bathing beaches are setting the standard for the North West region.

“Our bathing beaches are staffed all summer by lifeguards and have Council-managed facilities such as notice boards containing useful information and public toilets. They are very popular with residents and visitors alike and I hope that work being undertaken by other agencies will eventually mean that more of our beaches have the same, high quality water.”

Councillor Gill Gardiner who holds the portfolio for Environment added:  “Although the Council is not directly responsible for managing water quality, our contractors and coastal rangers work hard to remove litter which, sadly, is often left by people visiting the beaches.

“We now have use of a mechanical beach rake as well as support from youth offending teams and groups of outstanding volunteers, which help to ensure that our coastline is attractive all year round.”
