Wirral businesses recognised at tourism award ceremony

Winners from The Wro Bar and Lounge

Wirral’s tourism offer was further boosted at this year’s prestigious Mersey Partnership tourism awards as two local businesses were declared as the best in their category.

Winners from Herons Well Cottage

West Kirby proved to be a winner with Herons Well Cottage picking up the award for the best self catering accommodation of the year while Wro Bar and Lounge won the best bar of the year.

The two were among 15 businesses recognised throughout Merseyside who gathered for the glittering event at the BT Convention Centre in Liverpool.

The awards are organised by TMP, the official tourist board for the Liverpool city region and were hosted by BBC TV presenter Ranvir Singh.

Cllr. David Elderton, Wirral Council’s cabinet member for culture, tourism and leisure said: “Congratulations to Herons Well Cottage and The Wro Bar and Lounge. I must also congratulate Ceri Newton of the Edwardian Tea Room in Port Sunlight, who recently won the best cake category along with Typhoo of Moreton who won the best tea at this year’s Fine Food Northwest Awards.

“This is fantastic recognition in Wirral’s Year of Food, for our food, drink and accommodation offer and indeed proof of Wirral’s regional importance as a great place to eat, drink and stay.”

An independent panel of judges undertook a comprehensive judging process to review the achievements of more than 100 entrants from a wide variety of large and small tourism businesses. The second round included a series of ‘mystery shop’ visits to entrants in the selected award categories.

David Andrews, director of visitor economy for TMP, said: “The awards are an excellent way to recognise and reward the hard work undertaken by both small and large visitor economy businesses during the last 12 months. Individually they are all achieving notable success.

“Collectively they are contributing to a great success story. These awards recognise the success and once again raise the profile of our destination and all it has to offer visitors.”
