Vegetarian Chefs of the Year announced
10th May 2010
Ross Gray from Peninsula Dining Rooms and Alistair Reid from the Woodcote House Hotel have been declared joint winners of Vegetarian Chef of the Year competition.
The purpose of the competition, launched by Bebington-based cookery school Vegi–Table, was to seek out the best vegetarian food on Wirral. Mo Hall and Sarah Kearns, the team behind the cookery school acknowledged that vegetarian diners were at a disadvantage when choosing enticing and imaginative options from menus. In recognition of Wirral’s Year of Food and the National Vegetarian week fast approaching, Wirral chefs were invited to showcase their efforts in a ‘cook off’ competition at Claremont Farm Kitchen. www.visitwirral.com/site/food
With such high standards the planned 3 finalists became 5, these included chefs from: Peninsula Dining Rooms, The Leverhulme Hotel, Woodcote House Hotel, Sheldrakes and RNK Afro-Caribbean Catering and Cookery.
Head judge and celebrity chef, Brian Mellor, along with a panel chose the two deserving winners. Those dishes which impressed the panel were: Ross Gray’s butternut squash, white leek and toasted pumpkin seed quinoa risotto with red amaranth, and Alistair Reid’s goats’ cheese royale with butternut squash cannelloni.
National Vegetarian Week runs from May 24-30. To celebrate, Vegi–Table is running a special Come Dine With Us cookery workshop, showing how to cook up a mouth-watering veggie dinner party at Claremont Farm Kitchen on May 29. Visit www.vegi-table.co.uk
