Amazing Navy centenary fly-past for Mersey waterfront
21st October 2009
The incredible sight of 40 Royal Naval aircraft of all vintages and types flying along the Mersey will take place on Friday at 2pm. Nothing like it has been seen before over the Mersey, as the aircraft, in “Balbo” or tiered formation, will approach from the south for the ceremonial fly-past over Liverpool Pier Head, before flying towards the river mouth. This will be the highlight of the Royal Navy’s great northern celebration of its centenary of flying. The event will start tomorrow with the arrival of HMS Illustrious, the UK’s strike aircraft carrier, which will dock at Liverpool Cruise Liner Terminal at 2pm and remain until Tuesday. Fly Navy 100 marks the 100th anniversary of the Fleet Air Arm and Naval Aviation.
