Year of Food.

To celebrate all the successes and achievements of Wirral’s food and tourism industry, 2010 has been declared Wirral’s Year of Food; a year long celebration of fantastic food in Wirral.

In the last four years Wirral’s food sector has gone from strength to strength. There have been many successes in Wirral’s restaurant industry – in January 2009, Fraiche in Oxton was awarded a much deserved Michelin star, and later in the year was declared to have the best wine list of any UK restaurant by the Good Food Guide. Da Piero, a small restaurant in Irby, was recognised as the best new entry in the 2010 Which Guide, and has been described as serving “food that fills you with joy.”

Roses Tearooms in Heswall won not only the Taste of Liverpool award, but also the award for Taste of the Northwest in 2008, and was named by The Times as one of the 8 best places to eat in England.

Competitions like Home Grown Chef Shine provide a platform, not just for Wirral’s talented Chefs, but also for the exceptional local produce. In 2009 and 2008 the Chef Shine winner was Emma Wombwell, head chef at The Wheatsheaf Inn, which is a fantastic example of Wirral’s great selection of gastro pubs and bars.

Wirral’s fresh food industry has been boosted by Wirral’s Farmers Market, a nationally award winning market which benefits its community. There are thriving farm shops, which sell the very freshest produce like Church Farm and Claremont Farm. Claremont Farm is also home to Wirral’s Food and Drink Festival, which takes place every August Bank Holiday, and Claremont Kitchen which hosts a series of food and cookery courses, including Brian Mellor, The Vegi-Table and the Chocolate Cellar.

Join us for events throughout the year to celebrate the Year of Food, especially the climax of the year, Christmas Gourmet Fair in Port Sunlight on 4th and 5th December 2010.
