2010 is Wirral’s Year of Food
27th January 2010
To celebrate all the successes and achievements of Wirral’s food and tourism industry, 2010 has been declared Wirral’s Year of Food; a year long celebration of fantastic food in Wirral.
In the last four years Wirral’s food sector has gone from strength to strength. There have been many successes in Wirral’s restaurant industry – in January 2009, Fraiche in Oxton was awarded a much deserved Michelin star, and later in the year was awarded the best wine list of any UK restaurant by the Which Good Food Guide. Da Piero, a small restaurant in Irby, was recognised as the best new entry in the 2010 Which Guide, and has been described as serving “food that fills you with joy.”
Cllr Bob Moon, Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Leisure for Wirral Council said: “Wirral has a fantastic reputation for food among residents and the visitors who know some of our best kept secrets. The Year of Food is an opportunity for us to shout about what we have on offer from our Michelin Star restaurant Fraiche to our award winning Farmers Market. We are really proud of our quality food producers and restaurants and we know the year will bring many new visitors to our beautiful peninsula.
“The response we’ve had from our food tourism businesses has been fantastic and there will be
new exciting events as well as established favourites for everyone to enjoy throughout 2010.”
To celebrate the Year of Food, Wirral Council has published its new ‘Wirral Good Food Guide’ highlighting the Borough’s fantastic producers, restaurants, tea rooms and gastro pubs. The guide is available by emailing your name and address to touristinfo@wirral.gov.uk and is a must for residents and visitors who enjoy shopping for, cooking and eating good quality food.
