Action-packed October planned at Birkenhead Park

9th October 2009

It might be autumn but the range and number of activities taking place at Birkenhead Park shows no sign of easing up even as the temperatures go down.

Individuals, community groups or school groups are being invited to take part in a major seed sowing exercise taking place in the park from next week.

The park rangers are leading the efforts to create a new wild flower meadow, with the first seeds being planted on Monday October 12th. The ground was prepared during the recent Transport Festival and it is hoped that there will be corn poppy, corn marigold, corn chamomile and cornflower planted to create a splash of summer colour near Park Road East. Anyone wishing to help out should contact the visitor centre on 0151 652 5197.

On Sunday 18th October, there will be the latest in the popular ranger-led walks in the park, this time looking at the signs of autumn and the beautiful colours of the park's magnificent trees. The walk, as ever, starts from the Pavilion visitor centre at 1.30pm until around 3pm.

An exhibition of work by local artist Robert Jackson will be on display in the exhibition area of the visitor centre from 25th to 30th October. Robert will also hold classes for children and adults based on his work on display. The theme is mostly pastels and activities will involve sand and scribble! Robert will also undertake commissions by arrangement.

From 26th October, it is the autumn half term for schools so once again there are a range of activities planned for local youngsters, including the afore-mentioned sand and scribble sessions, art for the under-8s, pumpkin creations, angling taster sessions and the Claire House Ghost Walk.

To book contact Birkenhead Park Visitor Centre, Park Drive, Birkenhead, CH41 4HY or telephone 0151 652 5197.

Finally, looking even further ahead, the Friends of Birkenhead Park have produced a calendar for 2010 entitled 'Birkenhead Through the Seasons', which follows on from their spring photographic exhibition at the visitor centre. The calendars are on sale now priced £3 and would make an ideal Christmas gift.
