Port Sunlight

Port Sunlight was founded on four principles; Industry, Art, Education and Charity.  One of Britain’s most unique model villages, Port Sunlight is a true living example of one man’s vision.  William Hesketh Lever founded the village in 1888 for his soap factory workers and it remains virtually unchanged, with over 800 Listed buildings set in magnificent gardens.  Lever employed thirty different architects to create Port Sunlight’s unique style.  His village plans included quality housing and community services, including a school, hospital, swimming pool and gymnasium, village halls, social clubs and the majestic Christ Church.  It is one of the finest and largest War Memorials outside London and is home to the renowned Lady Lever art Gallery, one of the most opulent and beautiful galleries in the country.

Opened in 1891, Port Sunlight even has its own theatre – The Gladstone.  Run by the voluntary Gladstone Theatre Trust, the group presents both professional and amateur shows as well as hosting local operatic societies, musical groups and dancing schools.

A new and exciting museum called Sunlight Vision offers a glimpse into the social history of the village during the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Why not visit the gift shop or explore with a self guided tour of the village.  Guided tours can be arranged all year-round for group bookings.

One of the highlights of the year is a traditional village fete which takes place in the delightful village of Port Sunlight and features fairground rides, stalls, Victorian games and various other activities for a great family day out!

Port Sunlight is a conservation area and is still within its original boundaries – a truly wonderful day out - not to be missed!
