Parkgate

Parkgate is a small village, situated just over the border of Wirral on the banks of the River Dee. Feel the fresh west wind blowing on your face from across the desolate marsh, giving excellent views across to the Welsh Hills. It was from here many years ago that sailing ships once left for Ireland, bathing-machines full of people splashing about coyly and, fishing boats filled with their catch returning low in the water.

Today you too can take in the clean air, the stunning views across the River Dee and sample the 'catch of the day' superbly prepared in one of the local eateries. Residents and visitors alike can be found sampling the fresh shrimps on sale along the parade.

A visit to the famous ice cream shop on the parade is also a 'must' with its delicious and sometimes unusual range of home-made ice-creams.

Parkgate is renowned for its high tide Birdwatches when up to 400 birders may be present. Please click here for further information of all Birdwatching activities in Wirral, including Parkgate.

These days a look over the sea front reveals miles of marsh only covered by the sea during a few days a year at the highest spring tides. The silting up of the estuary makes a fascinating human story and many people don't realise that it was only seventy years ago that the marsh reached Parkgate as it spread along the Wirral coast.

All in all, Parkgate is well worth a visit!
