Hoylake and West kirby
These two seaside villages are located at the northern tip of the Wirral Peninsula.
Hoylake is home to The Royal Liverpool Golf Club, one of the finest links courses in the world.
The main shopping area is Market Street, which is the main road that runs through the town and carries on easterly to the village of Meols and westerly to West Kirby.
After you have had your fill of shopping, there is a great range of food and drink to suit all tastes in the restaurants and lively venue bars and homely pubs, with live entertainment being the norm in many.
The town grew up in the nineteenth century as a fishing village, though with the silting up of the Dee estuary little fishing is carried out today. However, the town still supports a permanent lifeboat station, and a sailing club.
The town is now largely a retirement location, though there is also an active nightlife in the town centre.
West Kirby is a traditional seaside resort with a Marine Lake, promenade, parks and elegant shopping parades. It's a starting point for walks across the sands to Hilbre Islands. Wirral Country Park includes the former West Kirby to Hooton railway woodlands rich with wildlife and low cliffs near to Thurstaston Visitor Centre, grassy headlands rising above the miles of fine sands along the Dee Estuary. The views across to the Clwydian Mountains are superb.
In summer, West Kirby is alive and vibrant with tourists and locals alike, who take pleasure in enjoying the sunny climate of the resort in the rain shadow of the Welsh hills. West Kirby has plenty to offer to all, with a host of speciality shops, pubs, bistros, bars and excellent restaurants.
At the end of the prom, turn left into Banks Road where the shopping centre begins. Take your time, as there is a splendid array of shops, many of them tucked away beneath the arcades, in a host of nooks and crannies.
Stroll along the magnificent promenade with it's famous massive salt-water Marine Lake, a playground for wind surfers from all over the country. Or why not get wet yourself and have a go at sailing, canoeing or windsurfing on the Lake.
Or why not just sit back and simply relax on the award-winning sandy beach!
