Wallasey Golf Club
Home of the Stableforth scoring system.
Wallasey was once described as "the Diamond in the Dunes", in recognition both of its idyllic setting amidst undulating land close to the Irish Sea as well as the excellent test of golf if offers.
The club also has a unique claim to fame being the home of the renowned Stableford scoring system used in competitions at golf clubs all over the world. Not surprisingly, then, it has been used as a venue for several Open qualifiers as well as the preliminary stages of the Amateur Championship in both 1995 and 2000.
Wallasey is by no means a pushover, even in calm conditions. Most of the course is played through sand dunes, with few flat lies on tight, running fairways. The greens are firm and fast, and constant sea breezes make clubbing difficult. Wallasey provides a stern but fair challenge, and is a superb test of golf for players of any standard.
The Course itself is a true test of golf, due in part to the prevailing north westerly winds and the variety of holes, made all the more interesting by the natural terrain. The final four holes are among the toughest, particularly the eighteenth. Golfers who take in a game at Wallasey will enjoy the challenge of the course and the well documented history and traditions of the game.
It is situated in the Wirral Peninsula overlooking Liverpool Bay and the Irish Sea, leaving it open to the elements and in particular, the wind.
