Type: Museum
Fort Perch Rock was built as a coastal defence battery during the Napoleonic period to protect the Port of Liverpool. It is open all year round and features a museum, exhibitions, tea-room and is the venue for many exciting events.
The Fort boasts several fine displays, most notably The Aviation Archaeology Museum which incorporates 'Luftwaffe over Merseyside'.
On the Naval front there is the Titanic/Lusitania exhibition which covers the ship’s connection with the Wirral. In addition, and of great interest, is the HM Submarine Thetis exhibition, which opened on the 60th anniversary of the sinking of the submarine – resulting in the tragic loss of seamen and civilian workers.
The latest exhibit in the naval exhibition room is a totally unique 1/48 scale model of the battleship HMS Prince of Wales. It is a source of great attraction and interest to every age group and generation, and has been viewed on more than one occasion by survivors from the original(sunk in 1941 by the Japanese), for some of whom, the sheer size, complexity, and true detail of the model has proved to be an emotional roller coaster. The model fittingly is displayed in the same room as the HMS Thetis exhibition, both vessels having been designed and built at the Cammell Laird shipyard situated only a short distance from the Fort Perch museum. It was previously displayed in the the Birkenhead Town Hall museum, and subsequently at the Ferry Terminal and then the Transport Museum.
While here don't miss the Marine Radio Museum where you will find marine radio equipment and
the Merchant Navy memory room - preserving the history of the equipment and associated bookes and journals.
