Birkenhead Park
A 'Park for the People' was the aim of Joseph Paxton when he designed Birkenhead Park as the first publicly funded park in the world; and today it is just as important as when it opened in 1847. It was declared a Grade I Historic Park in 1995 by English Heritage, and has just completed an £11 million restoration.
In addition to the children's play area, visitors can:
- Stroll, cycle, jog, fish and play a variety of sports
- Relax in Cappuccino's in the Park - a bright modern coffee shop, set within the Park
- View local and national displays in the stunning new visitor centre
- Enjoy floral displays and magnificent trees
- Join in the walks, talks, crafts, drama, art and family activities in the exciting events and education programmes
